“Superficial Love”

By KryScott and Donielle Edwards

We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 HCSB

When we become Christians, we naturally love God.  Just as how we naturally love our parents, sisters and brothers.  However, we work on ‘loving’ our friends and boyfriends/girlfriends.

Although we naturally love Jesus, we also need to work on loving Him beyond the superficial love that we develop.  Let me explain how our love for Jesus can be superficial.  He says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” John 14:15 and “If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar.  For the person who does not love his brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen.  And we have this command from Him: The one who loves God must also love his brother” 1 John 4:20-21.

Merriam-Webster Online defines superficial as “concerned only with what is obvious or apparent: not thorough or complete; affecting only the outer part or surface of something: not deep or serious.”

Our love tends to be superficial because we only love Jesus when everything is going good but as soon as we face trials and situations, we start to curse God.  As soon as we are faced with temptations, we choose to sin rather than try to be virtuous or righteous.

Superficial love is only concerned with ‘looking like we’re in love.’  We smile and wave and we sing but we don’t want to get uncomfortable.  We sing praises but we can’t worship because worship involves a deeper love that we have to work for.

Superficial love says, “I read my bible and pray and I speak in tongues but I don’t understand what the Word is saying to me, I don’t like to pray for too long and I don’t even know the benefit of speaking in tongues.”

For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands” 1 John 5:3 HCSB

But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God”  Jude 1:20-21 HCSB

We NEED to fall in love with Jesus.

Falling in love is defined as when “one person finds himself/herself excited and preoccupied with someone else and desirous of touching that person and being with that person as much as possible… It is as if there is a magnetic attraction to the other person that transcends rational thought” (Newman).

God does not want a superficial love.  He wants a deep love as he commanded us to give.  When His disciples asked Him what the greatest commandment is, “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matt 22:36-37.

Love is of God and from God.  Because God is love!

God’s love was manifested in Jesus. We should all seek to fall in love with God.

Galatians 5:22-26: Love is the fruit of your recreated spirit, by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in you.

Let us all meditate on the word and to really seek to fall in love with God; to really ask him to put away from us the superficial love that we give him.  The Lord requires real love because he is the God of Love.

Prayer: Father help us to understand the true meaning of love.  Almighty God, You are Love and so it is within us, we all have the gift of Love, help us to use it in the right way to please You, help us to go deeper and be lost in our love for You.  Thank You, Father for Your unconditional love towards us!!  In your most precious name amen.
