Falling in Love with Jesus

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matt 22: 37

Recap of Superficial Love

~ Superficial means not thorough or complete, appearing only on the surface, not deep but shallow

~ Superficial love is concerned only with getting and not giving

~ When persons have surface love they do not like to be in difficult situations and refuse to submit their desires to God’s will.

~ God wants us to fall in love with Him and give Him more than the superficial

God commands that we work towards reaching a deep, serious, and mature love with Him as is indicated in Matt 22: 37 when Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with your entire being (heart, soul, and mind).

Love is an action. NOT a feeling.  1 Corinthian 13 tells us the actions that are and are not love.  So feeling ‘highly emotional’ is not an indication that our love is deep.  It’s still shallow.  Our love with God becomes deep when we start to ACT it out.

Here are a few steps to fall in love with Jesus:

Step 1: Acceptance

There is one specific key to open the door to deeper LOVE in our relationship with God: it’s called the Key of Acceptance. Because love means that we allow another person to “see into” us and they allow us to “see into” them, the Key of Acceptance must be used” (Schutte).

We need to accept that we are not royal, priestly, or chosen without Jesus.  We need to accept that it is He who chose us and not us who chose Him.  In addition, we need to admit that Jesus is THE Lord of our lives and we have little or no say in what we want to do once we surrender to Him.

Accepting these will cause us humble ourselves before God and give us an understanding of why we must truly love Him.  While the superficial love has an attitude that says, “God needs me but I only need Him when things need to be fixed.”

Step 2: Spend time “Listening” to Jesus

In a new relationship, we spend hours talking to the other person, our desire is to spend extra time with them with the goal of knowing all about them.  We purchase phone cards and we clear our busy schedules to plan a date.  Same with God.  Let us clear our schedule to find out all about Him.  This step will shift us pass the superficial because in knowing how God operates, we will understand the storms and temptations in our life and instead of cursing, we praise; instead of sin, we walk away from the temptation.

This step is not about literally hearing His voice.  It’s about reading the Word; find out what His Word has to say to you, teach you and where it wants to lead you.  It’s more than just reading, it’s reading with a purpose.  Reading to understand; reading to apply the lessons to your life.

James 1: 22-25 KJV

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;  for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”

Step 3: Give God EVERYTHING.

Everything does not mean our earthly treasurers. It means all that we will give God account for in the day of judgement, which are our heart, mind, and soul.

Our Heart – the core of our being that dictates what we say.  It determines if we are obedient (heart of flesh) or disobedient (heart of stone).  Our heart will determine the level of passion we have when loving God.

Our Soul – our life, our flesh is alive only because our soul lives. In other words, God wants our life.

Our Mind – the instrument we use to think, to understand, and to make decisions.  Colossians says, “…set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth” (3: 2, AMP).  If we give God our minds, all our thoughts will be filled with Him and all our decisions will be made with Him in mind.

Giving God our heart + soul + mind = giving Him our ALL.

Step 4: Uniting our desires – compromising

Before marriage, an engaged couple has to make certain decisions, such as: where they will live, which church they will attend, how many children they want to have.  The woman may want to live in Clarendon and the man in Manchester, she may want to worship at his church but he wants to worship at her church or one may want 3 children and the other two.  They are faced with the challenge of uniting their desires, coming to a compromise.  They may decide to live on the border of Clarendon and Manchester, worship at her church and have 2 children.  If these issues are unresolved, it spells danger for the marriage.

So it is with God.

Our final step to falling in love Him is to submit/unite our desires, our will, with His.

That involves obeying the 10 commandments and the other principles throughout the bible.  Eg. Proverbs 12:22 says, “The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”  We want to lie but God wants the truth.  So we have to stop lying.  “If you love Me, keep My commandments” John 14:15

Matt 6:33 says we must first seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and then everything we require will be added to us.  Once we unite our desire with God’s and put Him first in our lives, He unites His desires with ours and gives us that blouse or shoes we liked but could not afford.

When we honour our side of the contract, God honours His.  It’s a two-way street. Not a one-way.

“There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment” 1Jo 4:18 HSCB

There is no need to remain at the superficial level.  God wants us to have a deeper love for Him.  A love that is true and will withstand trials like the love Job and David had for God.  A love like Joseph’s that ran away in the face of temptation.  We NEED to move pass the superficial.  Let us fall in love with Jesus.

You love Him, though you have not seen Him” 1 Peter 1:8 HSCB
